WHAT’S IN YOUR HAND?

Colossians 2:8-10 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. 9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

I.              Opening

A.            Needing more

1.             Our society is very materialistically driven

a)             There is always something newer and better that you absolutely must get now

(1)           We can point to the launch of the IPhone
(2)           People were camped out for days to be able to be the first to get the IPhone 1,2,3,4, and now 5
(a)           I will prophesy to you that on the launch of the IPhone 6 there will still be some people camped out so that they can be the FIRST to get the IPhone 6

2.             We can look at ticket lines for sporting events such as the Super Bowl

a)             People will pay incredibly inflated prices and some will travel great distances to be able to attend this event

(1)           Again I will prophesy to you, that the same thing will happen at the next Super Bowl

3.             Girls will scream themselves hoarse at a Justin Bieber concert

a)             A few years from now though, there will be a new “crush” for all these girls or younger ones to rave about

4.             The car commercials of today will advertise the latest and greatest car

a)             Only to be superseded next year by next year’s model

b)             At one time the car that you drive today was THE LATEST AND GREATEST

5.             Facebook and Twitter followings

a)             Some people play the online “status” game

(1)           I have X amount of friends on Facebook
(2)           This many people follow me on Twitter
(a)           But there is always someone with more friends and more followers.

B.            We are never complete

1.             We are constantly inundated with the idea that we are not complete

a)             We don’t have the latest tech gadget

b)             We have not been to the latest sporting event or concert

c)             We don’t have the best stuff

d)             We don’t have the most Facebook friends or most followers on twitter

(1)           Some people derive their self worth from these types of superficial things

II.            Complete in HIM

A.            But I have come with a Biblical Truth for you this morning

Colossians 2:10And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

1.           Whether you have the IPhone 1 or 5 really doesn’t matter

2.             Whether you have been to a Super Bowl or latest concert really doesn’t matter

3.             Whether you have the best car or nicest home really doesn’t matter

4.             How many friends you have on Facebook or how many followers on Twitter really doesn’t matter

a)             The church needs a fresh revelation that we are complete in HIM

B.            If you’re self worth is in temporal things then your self worth will be temporal as well

1.             The greatest athlete will be overshadowed by another coming up

2.             The most powerful politician will eventually be replaced

3.             The CEO today, will someday retire

4.             The cutting edge Tech of today will be obsolete tomorrow

a)             But we are COMPLETE in Him

(1)           The world will try to convince you that you need all of these things to be happy or successful
(2)           But I tell you today, that we are COMPLETE in Him
(3)           If we have Jesus we have everything that we need!

III.          Inadequacy

A.            The world will try to convince you that you are inadequate

1.             That you are nothing without this product or that product

2.             That you need this or need that

a)             But that is a lie from the pits of hell

b)             We are not defeated

c)             We are not inadequate

(1)           All we need is Jesus

B.            The world tells us we need more stuff

1.             But God calls us to use what we have

IV.          What’s in your Hand

A.            God wants us to get to the place where we stop thinking about our inadequacy

1.             We’re not as big as that church

2.             We’re not as well known as that congregation

a)             They have this and they have that.

(1)           And the enemy will try to convince us that we are inferior and inadequate

b)             But God is asking us – What’s in your hand?

B.            I hear the voice of the Lord speaking to Moses

1.             Moses my people are in bondage in Egypt

a)             You are going to be the one that delivers them

2.             You must be mistaken God

a)             I tried before and failed

b)             I can’t speak well

c)             The people won’t listen

(1)           He had all the reasons why He was inferior and inadequate

Exodus 4:2 And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod.

3.             What’s in your Hand Moses?

a)             Oh this – it’s just my old walking stick God

b)             I use it to walk over these mountains

c)             I use it to herd the sheep

(1)           I’ve had it for years – but so what God?

Exodus 4:17And thou shalt take this rod in thine hand, wherewith thou shalt do signs.

4.             That Rod Moses – Take that same Rod in your hand

a)             With that same old Rod you will do signs and wonders

b)             You will bring so great a deliverance that the Egyptians will pay you to leave.

c)             What you have always had, is what you have always needed

5.             God’s response was to get Moses to stop thinking about what he did not have and to look at what He did have

a)             You don’t need a new Rod – you just need to look at what you have in your hand

C.             I hear the voice of the Lord speaking to Gideon

1.             Gideon you’re a valiant man that will deliver Israel from the Mideonites

a)             Lord you must be mistaken

b)             I’m not a warrior – you’ve got the wrong guy

(1)           I’m inferior, I’m inadequate, I can’t do it

2.             What’s in your hands Gideon?

a)             This it’s just a trumpet, a pitcher of water, and a lamp

b)             Their just common items – everyone has them

c)             There’s nothing special about them at all

3.             Using only what is in your hand you will bring deliverance to Israel

a)             In fact you are going to be the catalyst for such a great and sweeping victory

b)             You don’t need a sword or a spear

c)             You don’t need a shield

Judges 7:16-21 And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man’s hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers. 17And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do. 18 When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon. 19 So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands.  20 And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.  21 And they stood every man in his place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and cried, and fled.

4.             The enemy will tell you that you are weak

a)             He will try to make you feel inferior or inadequate

b)             But he is a liar – you don’t need anything new

(1)           You just need what you have in your hand!

D.            I hear the voice of Jesus speaking to Andrew

1.             Andrew the multitude is hungry

a)             And we must feed them

John 6:8-9 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, saith unto him, 9 There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?

2.             Lord you must be mistaken

a)             Two hundred penny worth of bread would not feed this multitude

b)             We don’t have that much money or that much bread

3.             Andrew what’s in your hand?

a)             This, it’s just a boy’s sack lunch

b)             It’s five bread rolls and two small fishes

c)             It’s enough for the boy to eat but not enough for this multitude

4.             Using only what is in your hand we will feed the multitude

a)             Make them sit down

John 6:11And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.

b)             No it’s not much, but it’s in your hand and it will be more than enough

c)             So much so that each disciple will have a basketful left over

E.             I hear the voice of the Lord speaking to Rahab

1.             Jericho is going to fall

a)             I have given the land to my People the Jews

b)             But you can save yourself and your family

2.             Who me God? I am nothing.

a)             I’m not a warrior

b)             I’m not even righteous – I am a harlot

c)             I’m not even a Jew

d)             I’m an immoral Gentile woman

(1)           What can I do?

3.             What’s that in your hand?

a)             This, it’s just a red cord

b)             I use it to pull the drapes closed

c)             It’s nothing special, I’ve always had it

4.             Using only what you have in your hand you will save yourself and your family

a)             The walls of Jericho are going to fall, but your house and your part of the wall will still stand

b)             You will all be spared as the city is taken

c)             In fact Rahab, you will even be in the lineage of the Messiah

(1)           It’s not a new cord – but it’s in your hand

V.            Closing – what’s in your hand?

A.            Perhaps like Moses you need deliverance today

1.             Can you hear Jesus?  What’s in your hand?

a)             Well it’s just this old Bible

b)             Everyone has one –

c)             It’s nothing special

2.             But the voice of Jesus answers

3.             By reading your Bible – I will show you the way to deliverance

B.            Perhaps like Gideon you need a victory today

1.             Can you hear Jesus?  What’s in your hand?

a)             It’s just my other hand clasped together in prayer

b)             Lots of people pray

c)             It’s nothing special

2.             But the voice of Jesus answers

3.             With your prayers – I will help you overcome the attacks of the enemy

C.             Perhaps like Andrew you need a blessing

1.             Can you hear Jesus?  What’s in your hand?

a)             It’s just my Tithe check

b)             It’s not very large or impressive

c)             It’s nothing special

2.             But the voice of Jesus answers

3.             Through your faithful giving – I will more than provide

D.            Perhaps like Rahab you need Salvation today

1.             Can you hear Jesus?  What’s in your hand?

a)             It’s just my heart oh God

b)             It’s bruised and wrecked

c)             It’s nothing special

2.             But the voice of Jesus answers

3.             With your heart freely given to me through repentance and Baptism in my Name – I will grant to you salvation

E.             The world will tell you that you’re inferior and inadequate

1.             You need this and you need that.

2.             But we are COMPLETE in HIM and ONLY in HIM

F.             Jesus is asking you the question today -What’s in your hand?

1.             Saint of God – what’s in your hand?

2.             Friend and visitor – what’s in your hand?

3.             Because you have everything that you need!

4.             Right in your hand today!
