The book of Nehemiah is a book of restoration, a record of the rebuilding of the walls and gates of Jerusalem. But it is also a picture of the work God is doing in the restoration of his church - the spiritual City of God. King Artaxerxes issued the decree for the rebuilding of Jerusalem in 445 BC. The Temple had been rebuilt under the leadership of Ezra, but the walls of the city itself still lay in ruins.
