I had seen photographs of poverty. I had heard stories about children living without safe homes, adequate food, or the opportunity to receive an education.

But seeing it with your own eyes changes you.

As we traveled through villages in West Bengal, we saw families living with needs that are difficult for many of us to imagine. We saw poverty, inadequate housing, unsafe water, and children whose futures were filled with uncertainty.

They children had names.

They had personalities.

They had dreams.

They needed someone to see them, love them, and give them an opportunity.

I returned home knowing that I could not solve every problem I had seen. But I also knew that doing nothing was not an acceptable response.

That burden became OpportunityHope.org.

We Began With a Burden for Children

OpportunityHope began with a simple desire: give vulnerable children a safe place to live and a genuine opportunity for a better future.

Through the generosity of churches, pastors, businesses, and individuals, an orphanage was built in West Bengal, India.

Today, children who might otherwise have faced poverty, homelessness, exploitation, or life without an education are receiving:

• A safe place to live

• Nutritious meals

• Clothing

• Beds and bedding

• Educational materials

• Medical care and vaccinations

• Loving relationships

• Christian care

• Hope for the future

Every child needs more than a building.

A child needs to know:

• I am safe.

• I am loved.

• I am not forgotten.

• Someone believes my life has value.

• I have an opportunity to learn.

• I have a future.

That is what we are working to provide.

Education Can Change a Child’s Future

The orphanage established an English-speaking school to give our children a quality education.

Something wonderful began happening.

Families from nearby villages saw the opportunity the school was providing and began enrolling their children. The school started serving not only the children living at the orphanage but also children from the surrounding community.

Growth created a new need.

The school now needs additional space to serve students in grades six through eight. Those grade levels are not presently available in that area, which means some children may be unable to continue their education locally.

Engineers have prepared plans for an additional school building. As of this 2026 update, the estimated construction cost is $22,548.

That amount may seem large when one person looks at it alone.

But when God’s people work together, a large need can become manageable:

• Twenty people can help.

• Twenty churches can help.

• Twenty businesses can help.

• Hundreds of individuals giving what they can can help.

• One person sharing the need with the right person can help.

No one person must do everything.

But every one of us can do something.

Giving Provides More Than a Building

When we talk about constructing a school, we are not merely talking about concrete, walls, and a roof.

We are talking about what can happen inside that building.

A school creates room for:

• Children to learn

• Teachers to serve

• Young minds to develop

• Families to discover new possibilities

• Students to prepare for meaningful work

• Communities to become stronger

• The cycle of poverty to be challenged

• Hope to take root

A building is only a tool.

The children are the purpose.

Education cannot solve every problem, but it can open doors that poverty has kept closed. It can help a child imagine a future beyond mere survival.

When you help build a classroom, you are helping build that future.

The Needs Continue Every Month

Construction projects are important, but the daily needs do not stop while a building is being planned.

Children still need to eat.

Teachers still need to be paid.

Clothing still wears out.

Beds and bedding still need to be replaced.

Medical needs still arise.

School supplies must still be purchased.

OpportunityHope provides several ways for people to help:

• Support a child: Monthly support helps provide food, clothing, bedding, healthcare, and educational materials.

• Support a teacher: Monthly gifts help us retain English-speaking teachers and caregivers.

• Help build the school: One-time gifts can be designated toward the additional school building.

• Provide clean water: Gifts help construct wells for communities without reliable access to safe drinking water.

• Provide livestock: Goats, pigs, and other livestock can help families develop a source of food and income.

• Support a project: One-time gifts can be directed toward current humanitarian needs.

Some people can make a large gift.

Others can give something small each month.

Some churches can adopt a project.

Some businesses can use part of their profits to meet a need.

Every gift matters when it is placed in God’s hands.

Clean Water Gives an Entire Community Hope

The work of OpportunityHope extends beyond the orphanage.

Many communities in West Bengal struggle to obtain safe drinking water. Some water sources are contaminated with arsenic, human waste, animal waste, and disease.

A new well can change life for an entire village.

Think about how often you use clean water in one day:

• You drink it.

• You cook with it.

• You wash your hands with it.

• You bathe in it.

• You clean your home with it.

• You give it to your children without wondering whether it will make them sick.

Many families do not have that assurance.

Clean water is not a luxury.

It is life.

A well does more than provide water. It can reduce sickness, save hours of travel, protect children, and bring hope to a community.

Livestock Can Help a Family Become Self-Sufficient

There is an important difference between helping someone survive today and helping someone build a better tomorrow.

Sometimes a family needs immediate assistance. At other times, the greatest help we can provide is an opportunity to develop a sustainable source of food and income.

Livestock projects can provide families with:

• Milk

• Meat

• New animals

• Products that can be sold

• Income for household needs

• Greater long-term stability

We are not merely giving people something to consume.

We are helping give them something they can build upon.

A goat may seem like a small gift to some of us. To a struggling family, that animal can become the beginning of a different future.

Why Should the Church Care?

James wrote:

“Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction…”

—James 1:27

Jesus also said:

“Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

—Matthew 25:40

We cannot read those words and conclude that the suffering of children is someone else’s concern.

The Gospel calls us to preach.

The Gospel also calls us to love.

It calls us to see the hungry, the thirsty, the vulnerable, and the forgotten.

Our compassion should move us:

• To pray

• To give

• To serve

• To speak

• To share

• To act

We may not be able to reach every child.

But we can reach this child.

We may not be able to help every village.

But we can help this village.

We may not be able to meet every need.

But we can meet the need God places before us.

Give With Confidence and Purpose

I understand that people want to know where their giving is going.

They should.

Stewardship requires honesty, accountability, and clear communication. When someone gives toward a child, teacher, well, livestock project, or school building, that person is trusting us to use the gift for its intended purpose.

That trust matters to me.

OpportunityHope was not created to build a name. It was created to build hope.

• Hope for a child who needs a home

• Hope for a student who needs an education

• Hope for a teacher who needs support

• Hope for a village that needs clean water

• Hope for a family that needs an opportunity

• Hope for people who need to know they have not been forgotten

This is not theory to me.

I have been there.

I have looked into the faces of these children.

I have walked through these villages.

I have seen the needs.

I have also seen what can happen when God’s people respond.

What Can You Do?

You do not have to travel to India to make a difference there.

You can help from where you are:

1. Pray. Pray for the children, teachers, caregivers, families, and communities we serve.

2. Give once. A one-time gift can help meet an immediate need or move the school project closer to completion.

3. Give monthly. Recurring support provides stability for children, teachers, and ongoing ministry.

4. Involve your church. A congregation can support a child, teacher, well, or larger project.

5. Involve your business. A business owner can dedicate part of a month’s profits or sponsor a specific need.

6. Share the work. Tell someone else what OpportunityHope is doing.

You may never personally meet the child your gift helps.

You may never drink from the well you helped build.

You may never sit inside the classroom you helped construct.

But God sees it.

The child will experience it.

The family will benefit from it.

The community will remember it.

Hope is not built through words alone.
