The Blessed Man – Blessed – Part Three

Psalm 1

1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

  • In this lesson we want to discuss what it means to be “blessed.” The Hebrew word for blessed in Psalm 1:1 is in the plural.

Literal translation:  “Oh, the happinesses of the man…”

  • The blessed man is not just blessed, but has available all spiritual blessings.
  • The Amplified Version defines blessed as: “happy, fortunate, prosperous and enviable.”
  • It is the state of prosperity or happiness that comes when a superior bestows his favor on someone. The state the blessed one enjoys does not always appear to be “happy” as we would define happiness.

For example:

Job 5:17 Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:

  • This was not describing Job’s condition as a “happy” one; it was blessed, however, in as much as God was concerned about him.
  • Because it was a blessed state and the outcome would be good, Job was expected to laugh at his adversity.

Job 5:22 At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.

  • Apostolic discipline is not bondage, slavery, or suppression; but the teaching of the right ways and customs expected of us by God. The state of the blessed is built on a foundation of a personal relationship with God. Blessedness is not a reference to a specific blessing in a particular situation; it is a quality of life, an atmosphere in which we live. Blessedness is God’s divine favor on our lives as a whole.  It is a product of a relationship that we have dedicated ourselves to.

Philippians 3:7-11

7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.

8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

  • The Hebrew word in Psalm 1:1 denotes a state of true well being. It is a gracious and saving effect of God’s favor. This blessedness is altogether apart from our outward condition. It always signifies happiness produced by some experience of God’s favor, and specially conditioned by the revelation of His grace. It refers to the spiritually prosperous state of that person who is the recipient of the Holy Ghost, who is enabled to minister these blessings to the believer, when that believer yields to the Spirit for that ministry and co-operates with the Spirit in working that ministry.
